Field Drainage Tile

Tile Drainage has come a long way since the days of using cement and clay as a material for drainage tile. The advent of a lightweight polyethylene plastic not only made it possible for farmers to tile their fields within a few days, installation was a breeze and not nearly as harmful to the land. As the use of plastic drainage pipe intensified, farmers were able to drain thousands of acres which not only resulted in a longer growing seasons, but in greater crop yields and lower production costs. Profits grew and the agriculture industry prospered. At Oxford Plastics, want to provide quality drainage tile (also known in Canada as Big O) for a variety of farming and agriculture applications. We offer a complete range of polyethylene pipe or tubing for collecting and removing subsurface water from a variety of environments. If you're a drainage contractor, and are looking for a reliable source of tile, we manufacture perforated drainage tile in sizes ranging from 3" to 24" and in coiled lengths up to 3500' . Call us today, and we will be pleased to answer all of your questions.

What is Field Drainage Tile?
Tile drainage is the method of removing excessive amounts of water from the subsurface of soil in a field or wet area using pipe. Whereas irrigation is the practice of adding water to dry soil, drainage removes water from wet soil for optimal crop growth and making land more accessible. In a typical tile drainage system, a network of pipe is installed just below the surface of the ground which allows water to move out from between soil particles and into the pipe through small perforations in the tile. At certain points along the way, the excess water is deposited into ditches, lakes, streams, and rivers, usually located at a lower elevation than the tile. In Canada, drainage tile was first introduced in 1967 by Big O, (now a trade mark of Armtec), and is still known as "Big O" drainage tile. Since then Oxford Plastics, along with many other manufacturers of drainage tile, have continued to develop drainage tile technology to meet the growing demand in agriculture and landscape drainage.

Why Use Hdpe Drainage Tile?
Installing drainage tile in a field or any area with too much water is difficult enough when the pipe is heavy and rigid. Sunlight, heat and impact damage are also major issues for drainage contractors, since a lot of piping materials are too easily affected by cold weather, abrasive soil and water. A third major issue to consider when choosing drainage tile includes operation reliability and durability. No one can afford to spend time on repairing broken tile or tile that has been worn down by adverse conditions. Hdpe pipe is not only lightweight and flexible, which makes it easy to install, it is tough, reliable and surprisingly durable.

Main Features of Drainage Tile
Tile made from polyethylene is a cost effective and time tested solution for a broad range of piping problems in the drainage industry. Time tested and proven effective for above ground, surface, buried, and subsurface drainage applications, the main features of our drainage pipe include the following:

  • Reduced Installation Costs
Hdpe drainage tile is light weight which means lighter equipment will be needed for handling and installation. Produced in straight lengths or coils, hdpe drainage tile comes in longer lengths and requires fewer fittings which allows for significant savings in labor and equipment.
  • Durable and Tough - polyethylene drainage tile and fittings are surprisingly resilient and resistant to damage caused by external loads, vibrations, and from other pressure surges such as water hammer. It also has a high strain allowance which prevents any kind of breakage due to cold weather.
  • Easy To Repair
Compared to other pressure pipe materials, hdpe drainage tile has the lowest repair frequency per mile of pipe per year.
  • Corrosion, Abrasion and Chemical Resistant. Polyethylene drainage tile doesn't rust, or corrode. It will out last other more costly tiling materials when conveying abrasive materials. It offers better overall resistance to corrosive acids, solvents, fuels, bases and salts and is virtually inert. Best of all, is is not affected by bacteria, fungi or naturally aggressive soils.
  • Available in sizes ranging from 3" to 15" - our drainage pipe is available in a wide range of diameters and wall thickness, with flanges, elbows, tees, and valves, providing a total system solution.

Drainage Tile Applications
We provide a complete range of drainage and transfer pipe designed to collect and remove subsurface water in various situations. We also provide a complete range of fittings and accessories to complement any drainage project. For fine soil situations we offer a variety of engineered filter products designed to limit the movement of soil particles into the drainage system while still allowing removal of subsurface water.
